Advocate 'Light' on journalistic competence and integrity

I'm not surprised to read throughout cyberspace about how the Door County Advocate claimed recently to have been "duped" into publishing a letter from a certain "Ellie Light," who praised President Barack Obama and falsely claimed to live in northeast Wisconsin.

This is the type of shoddy journalism I've expected under the current editor's watch, which over the past year has overseen the demise of the Advocate, now a laughing stock in the community.

It's ironic that some… Continue

Press-Gazette ozone story full of hot air

Someone looking for reporting that is often inaccurate and politically biased, as was noted in survey results recently released by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, would be able to find that type of shoddy journalism in the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

For example, the front page of the Press-Gazette's Sept. 6 edition would be suitable for "The Onion," the fictitious publication based in Madison. The "gloom and doom" graphic that filled space at the top of the… Continue

Do you know the way to better business in Sturgeon Bay?

Traffic patterns through the east side of Sturgeon Bay's downtown, like the roads there the past two years, have been a work in progress.

The area has been affected by streets being torn up and rebuilt, one bridge closing and another opening, etc. What has been the east side's main west-to-east roadway, Michigan Street, has been closed for much of this summer between the bay and Fifth Avenue. There is now a so-called "bridge to nowhere" spanning the bay at the west end of Michigan… Continue

The Door County Advocate's lame coverage of 'health-care reform'

The Door County Advocate's recent coverage of "health-care reform" might qualify for disability, because it has been noticeably lame.

For example, the Advocate's Aug. 29 story by Kristen J. Kubisiak titled "Lawton 'speaks out'" parrots political propaganda and is void of substantive scrutiny of the not-so-hidden agenda behind her deceptive rhetoric.

Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton has shown she will say almost anything to promote her political agenda. For instance, she has claimed… Continue

Paying more and getting less with the 'dive after five'

Late July 2009 not only marks an anniversary for when the first man walked on the moon 40 years ago, it also marks five years since Frank Wood sold out the newspapers he owned in northeast Wisconsin to Gannett.

While technology for mankind to travel into space has improved in the past four decades, the quality of journalism at the now Gannett-owned newspapers has deteriorated since the megacorporation’s takeover.

With the per-copy price of the Door County Advocate’s “dead… Continue
